So much time and attention has been given to the work from home and work from anywhere discussion that the real point has been ignored. The issue or goal is not where one works, from home, at office or from anywhere. The desire is and always should be results or outcomes. The discussion should be results at work, results from home or results from anywhere. Or results from everywhere!
The conversation needs to shift and be focused on results and outcomes and to define the most adaptive or optimal execution model for a business or endeavor. With a focus on an Optimal Execution Model or an Adaptive Execution Model, the emphasis shifts from where resources are located to how best to utilize the collective capabilities of the resources to achieve desired results. In one simplistic way, this is the definition of a system – an interrelated group of resources working together towards the achievement of a common goal.
The very heart of the discussion should always be alignment between what is desired as an outcome and what is the best way to achieve that outcome. We should not start with artificial constraints such as “all our resources are in an office in Seattle” or “everyone is working remotely” for that matter. The focus needs to be on what is the best way to accomplish what we treasure, what we value and what our customers will value. This is the basis for the Optimal Execution Model. Then, when overlaying the reality that technology, and a myriad of other factors are continually adding a factor of change, the model needs to continuously adapt, leading to an Adaptive Execution Model at the heart of the strategy.
I have spent a significant amount of time recently developing these concepts and look forward to sharing ideas on the topic.
