Sony Corp. is expected to unveil two new eBook reading devices, one of which is priced as low as $199, in the continuing war for eBook market share. This was reported in the online edition of The Wall Street Journal. It also cited a reduction in pricing on best-selling e-books in Sony’s online store to $9.99 from $11.99. This matches the discount e-book price offered by Amazon for its Kindle readers.
As I had written before, the current batch of eBook readers are vying for your dedication as a consumer to one specific library of content. With this in mind, competitors are striving for a constant buzz in the marketplace so that when technology choices are being made, their offerings will be top of mind. If content is king, then review the content libraries before finalizing a technology (eBook reader) decision. Also, don’t ignore the possibility of a format dying off, leaving you with a reader without access to updated content. I have a feeling that there will be a glut of eBook marketing as we approach the holiday buying season later this year. It will be interesting to see how the consumer responds.
