Lack of Organizational Clarity is a Killer

Not too many things slow down progress more than a lack of organizational clarity with regards to responsibility and authority. I’m not sure if having more than one person responsible for something is much better than having no one responsible for something. What I am certain of is that if it is clear who is responsible for what, you will be better off. Invariably in the area of projects and implementing change, the concept of understanding who all the responsible parties are, and who all the decision makers are is not well developed in the early stages, leading at one end to delays and false starts and at the other end completely failed initiatives. This is one of the reasons I am a big fan of a Responsibility Assignment Matrix or a RACI Matrix for all functional areas in a business; or at a minimum, for all areas in scope for organizational change.
