Unencumbered by facts, it’s easy to say that when I have freedom to operate in any and all directions, it’s entrepreneurial – when I have to follow any rules it’s bureaucratic. The two words, entrepreneurial and bureaucratic have become two of my favorite sound bites lately. A great push back to attempting to put a rule or policy in place is that it is bureaucratic and that it lessens the entrepreneurial spirit and capability. Sometimes putting a structured process in place is mistaken for a rule (oh my). What a bad trap to fall into that any rules are automatically dismissed as adding bureaucracy. This is common when a true total cost or true total benefit of what’s under discussion is not understood. What is really unfortunate, is when the question isn’t even asked in the context of value, and simply dismissed as bureaucracy.
